Upright

The Hermit is the search within. It calls for solitude, reflection and the kind of understanding that only comes from stepping away from the crowd. This is not loneliness but chosen quiet: a retreat, a long walk, a season of study. The lantern says you already carry the light — you just need enough darkness to see it by.

Reversed

Reversed, the withdrawal has gone too far or is being refused. It can mean isolation that has become loneliness, a refusal of help, or the opposite: a person who needs time alone and will not take it. Come down the mountain, or go up it — but do it on purpose.

On the card

An old man in a grey cloak stands alone on a snowy peak, a staff in one hand and a lantern in the other. Inside the lantern burns a six-pointed star. He looks down, lighting the way for whoever climbs after him.

In love

A need for space, or a relationship built on quiet understanding. Time alone is not rejection.

Isolation mistaken for independence, or hiding from intimacy. Let someone in.

At work

Deep work, research, an independent path. Guidance from an experienced mentor.

Cut off from colleagues, or overthinking a decision that needs a conversation.

As advice

Go quiet for a while. The answer is not out there.

You have been alone with this long enough. Talk to someone.

Questions people ask about The Hermit

Is the Hermit a yes or no card?

Maybe. Not now: step back and think it through before you ask again.

For a yes-or-no question, draw a single card: the one-card spread.

What kind of person is the Hermit?

A solitary, thoughtful person: the introvert, the scholar, the wise older friend. They need a lot of time alone, and what they say is usually worth hearing.

How does the Hermit feel about you?

They feel something and need space to work out what. Silence here is not coldness; it is someone thinking.

What does the Hermit say about timing?

After a period of withdrawal: weeks, or a season. It is not a time to push. The answer comes once you have been alone with the question.
