Upright

Death is an ending, and endings are how things change. The card very rarely means a literal death; it means the close of a chapter that has run its course — a relationship, a job, an identity, a way of living. It is not gentle, but it is clean. What is over is over, and something you cannot yet see is on the other side of it.

Reversed

Reversed, the ending is being resisted. It marks fear of change, clinging to what has already gone, and the slow decay of something kept alive past its time. The change will come either way; reversed, it costs more.

On the card

A skeleton in black armour rides a white horse carrying a black banner with a white rose. A king lies dead beneath the hooves; a bishop, a woman and a child wait before it. In the distance the sun rises — or sets — between two towers.

In love

A relationship transforming or ending. Let what is dead be buried, and mourn it properly.

Staying because leaving is frightening. Stagnation is its own kind of loss.

At work

The end of a role, a company, a way of working. Clear the ground for what comes next.

Refusing to let a failing project die. Call it.

As advice

Let it end. Grieve, and then turn toward the towers.

The thing you are afraid of losing is already gone. Stop guarding the door.

Questions people ask about Death

Is Death a yes or no card?

No. Not to the thing as it is: it is ending. Yes to whatever comes after it.

For a yes-or-no question, draw a single card: the one-card spread.

What kind of person is Death?

Someone who changes you: the person who arrives as one chapter closes, or the one whose leaving closes it. Intense, transforming, hard to forget.

How does Death feel about you?

Their feelings have changed completely: either they are ending something, or something in them has been changed by you. Either way it will not go back to how it was.

What does Death say about timing?

At an ending. What is coming cannot start until the old thing is finished, so the timing is set by how soon you let it close.
