Ten of Swords · Minor Arcana
Ten of Swords
Painful ending, betrayal, rock bottom, loss.
Upright
The Ten of Swords is rock bottom. It speaks of a painful ending, betrayal, loss, and the kind of defeat that is total — there is no eleventh sword. But total is also finished. The sky is lightening; the hand still blesses. When it appears, something is truly over, and that means you can stop fighting it.
Reversed
Reversed, the swords are being pulled out. It marks recovery, regeneration, survival — or resisting an ending that has already happened. It can also be a wound reopened. Get up slowly, and do not lie back down on the swords.
On the card
A figure lies face down with ten swords in their back under a black sky, one hand making a sign of blessing. On the horizon, the sky is beginning to lighten.
In love
A relationship ending, a betrayal, the worst of it. It is over, and that is the mercy.
Recovering from a painful end, or refusing to accept one. Let it be finished.
At work
A crushing defeat, a redundancy, a project killed. There is nothing left to lose — so begin.
Survival and slow recovery. Or a collapse you keep re-living. Stand up.
As advice
Accept that it is over. The dawn is only on the other side of that.
Rise. The swords are behind you, not ahead.
