Nine of Swords · Minor Arcana
Nine of Swords
Anxiety, nightmares, worry, despair.
Upright
The Nine of Swords is the three-in-the-morning fear. It speaks of anxiety, nightmares, worry, guilt and despair — the mind turning on itself in the dark. The swords are on the wall, not in her; the fear is real but the danger usually is not. The card asks you to name what you are afraid of, out loud, in daylight.
Reversed
Reversed, the light comes in. It marks hope, releasing fear, recovery from a dark stretch, or the realisation that the worst-case never arrived. It can also mark turmoil kept hidden. Ask for help; you are not supposed to do this alone.
On the card
A woman sits up in bed in the dark with her face in her hands, nine swords hanging on the wall behind her. Her quilt is patterned with roses and zodiac signs.
In love
Anxiety about the relationship, fear of loss, worry that eats the good. Talk to them.
Fear easing, reassurance arriving, or worry that is still not being shared.
At work
Stress, sleepless nights, dread. The problem is smaller than the fear of it.
Relief; a worst-case that did not come. Or hidden strain — speak up.
As advice
Write the fear down. It shrinks on paper.
Tell someone. The dark is worse alone.
