Four of Swords · Minor Arcana
Four of Swords
Rest, recovery, contemplation, retreat.
Upright
The Four of Swords is rest after the fight. It speaks of recovery, retreat, contemplation and the necessary stillness before the next thing. The knight is not dead; he is resting. When the card appears, stop. Sleep, withdraw, take the sick day, let the mind go quiet. Nothing will be lost by it.
Reversed
Reversed, the rest is refused or has gone on too long. It marks restlessness, burnout from not stopping, stagnation from not starting, or the moment of waking up. Ask whether you need to lie down or get up.
On the card
A knight lies in effigy on a tomb in a chapel, hands in prayer, one sword carved beneath him and three hung on the wall above. A stained-glass window shows a scene of blessing.
In love
Time apart to recover, or a quiet, restorative stretch in the relationship. Not rejection.
Restless, or a pause that has become avoidance. Come back to each other.
At work
A break, a holiday, a stretch of quiet before a big push. Take it.
Burnout ignored, or a hiatus that needs to end. Listen to your body.
As advice
Rest. It is not a reward for finishing; it is how you finish.
You have rested; now rise. Or you have not rested — and you must.
