Four of Cups · Minor Arcana
Four of Cups
Apathy, contemplation, missed opportunity.
Upright
The Four of Cups is apathy with an offer in it. It speaks of contemplation, boredom, disconnection and a missed opportunity — the thing you want is being handed to you and you are too withdrawn to notice. The card is not a scolding; sometimes you need to sit under the tree. But look up occasionally.
Reversed
Reversed, the eyes open. It marks renewed motivation, awareness, coming out of a low period and seizing a chance that was there all along. It can also mark a withdrawal that has gone on too long. Either way: notice the fourth cup.
On the card
A young man sits under a tree with arms crossed, staring at three cups on the ground before him. A fourth cup is offered from a small cloud beside him, and he does not see it.
In love
Emotional withdrawal, taking a partner for granted, or not seeing who is right in front of you.
Re-engaging, seeing a relationship with fresh eyes, or accepting an offer of love you had ignored.
At work
Bored, unmotivated, or blind to an opportunity because it does not look like the one you wanted.
Re-engagement, a fresh idea, or finally saying yes to the offer.
As advice
Look up. Something is being offered right now.
You have contemplated enough. Reach for the cup.
