VIII · Major Arcana
Strength
Courage, compassion, inner strength, patience.
Upright
Strength is courage as gentleness, not force. The card shows the patience to stay with something wild until it trusts you. It speaks of inner strength, compassion, self-control and the confidence that does not need to raise its voice. Whatever the lion is in your life — a fear, a temper, a difficult person — it responds to steadiness, not domination.
Reversed
Reversed, the lion is winning. It points to self-doubt, raw emotion running the show, or a strength that has curdled into either weakness or brute force. Be kind to the part of you that is afraid; it is the one holding the reins.
On the card
A woman in a white gown gently closes the jaws of a lion with her bare hands, a garland of flowers around her waist and the lemniscate over her head. The lion's tail curls between its legs; it is not being fought, but calmed.
In love
A love that is patient and kind, and strong because of it. Passion held with care.
Insecurity, jealousy, or a loss of confidence in what you have to give. Begin with self-compassion.
At work
Handle the difficult thing with calm. You have more authority than the loud people in the room.
Feeling overwhelmed or losing your temper. Step back before you push through.
As advice
Be gentle and do not move. That is how you win this.
Courage is not the absence of fear. Do the small brave thing today.

Someone gentle and brave: the calm one in a crisis, the patient teacher, the friend who stays. Their strength is quiet and has nothing to prove.
How does Strength feel about you?
They feel a deep, steady affection and are willing to take their time with you. There may be real passion under it, well held.
