Five of Wands · Minor Arcana
Five of Wands
Competition, conflict, tension, rivalry.
Upright
The Five of Wands is conflict without a war. It speaks of competition, rivalry, clashing egos and the noisy friction of people who all want their idea to win. It is rarely serious — more a scuffle than a battle — but it is tiring. The card asks whether the fight is worth having, and if it is, to fight fairly.
Reversed
Reversed, the fight is either being avoided or moving inside. It marks resolution and cooperation after a clash, or the opposite: tension you refuse to voice, conflict that has gone underground. Say what you actually think.
On the card
Five young men brandish wands at each other in a disorganised brawl — or a game. No one is hurt; the sticks are raised but not landing, under a clear sky.
In love
Bickering, competing, or a relationship where you keep sparring. Passion, but too much friction.
Making peace after a fight, or swallowing resentment. Choose the first.
At work
Competition for a role, a brainstorm that becomes a shouting match, too many opinions. Healthy if it stays fair.
Avoiding a needed argument, or a conflict finally resolving. Clear the air.
As advice
Compete, but do not confuse noise with progress. Pick your battles.
The tension is still there, even if you are quiet about it. Address it directly.
