5-card spread
Career path
Five cards that climb from left to right, for questions of work, study and vocation. Where you stand now, the strengths you can lean on, what stands in the way, the next step to take, and where that step leads.
Hover a card to see what its position means.
The positions
- 1Where you areWhere you are: your working life as it stands, and how you feel in it.
- 2StrengthsThe strengths and resources you can draw on.
- 3ObstacleThe obstacle: what is holding you in place, from outside or from within.
- 4Next stepThe next step: the move the cards suggest you make.
- 5OutcomeThe outcome, if you take it.
Reading it well
Vocation, not just job
Ask about the work you want to be doing, not only the position you hold. Pentacles speak of the wage; Wands of the calling.
The obstacle card
If card 3 is a court card, the obstacle is probably a person — possibly you. If it is a Major, it is bigger than this job.
An example reading
“What is my next move at work?”
1 · Where you areTen of Wands
2 · StrengthsThree of Pentacles
3 · ObstacleThe Hanged Man
4 · Next stepPage of Pentacles
5 · OutcomeSix of Wands
The Ten of Wands is where you are: carrying more than your share. Your strength is the Three of Pentacles, working well with others, which is exactly what you have stopped doing. The Hanged Man as the obstacle says the block is a way of seeing, not a person. The next step is the Page of Pentacles, learning something new from the ground up, and the Six of Wands says it will be noticed.
