3-card spread

Three card

The simplest spread and still one of the most useful. Three cards in a row read as a sentence: what came before, what is here now, and where it is heading. It suits quick daily pulls and clear yes-or-no style questions alike.

The positions

  1. 1PastWhat has led to this moment: the roots of the situation and the energy you are carrying in.
  2. 2PresentThe heart of the matter as it stands today.
  3. 3FutureWhere things are moving if nothing changes: the likely outcome or the next step.

Reading it well

Read it as a sentence

Past, present, future is only the default. Try situation, obstacle, advice — or mind, body, spirit — and the same three cards tell a different story.

Watch the middle

The present card is the hinge. If it is a Major, the moment matters more than what came before or after.

An example reading

“Where is this new job going?”

  1. 1 · PastEight of Pentacles
  2. 2 · PresentTwo of Wands
  3. 3 · FutureThree of Wands

The Eight of Pentacles in the past says the job was earned by steady, unglamorous work. The Two of Wands in the present is someone holding the world in their hand and still deciding how big to think. The Three of Wands ahead is ships coming in: the larger plan pays off, so commit to it.
